Much of the commercial market is characterized by flat or low slope roofs where the material of choice is often sprayed on foams or sheets which are rolled on and melted together. The rubbers and plastics in small quantities are sometimes used in residential applications, but larger roofs are typically installed by specialist trained by the large industrial scale manufacturers.

Commercial roofing systems consist of several layers beginning with structural support and working up to the exterior. One optional exterior class is designed to reduce energy cost either through simple reflection of heat and light or combination insulationa and reflection. Ethylene, Propylene, Diene, Terpolymer (EPDM) is a mixed synthetic skin widely used on flat roofs. It comes in rolls and is sealed with adhesive and flashing. Fiberglass mat roofs are typical for small flat roofs. These systems are installed in layers and the mat is saturated with a flexible waterproofing agent. Coverboards are fire retardant or insulating mats onto which water resistant upper surfaces are attached. Several manufacturers produce these specialty items for larger flat roofs. Membranes may only provide an extra layer of waterproofing or may support other more complex requirements, such as vapor barriers or puncture prevention.

• United Coatings produces elastometric reflective coatings designed to be sprayed on top of other roofing material.
